Good teachers can leave a lasting impact on their students, and they are essential for a student’s academic development and growth. They should embody excellent teaching skills that make their teaching effective, engaging, and enjoyable. We always had that one teacher in school that we can never forget; and it is probably because of how they taught, their motivating attitude, or their friendly behavior. Good teachers can be a prodigious blessing for a student.

Qualities of a Good Teacher

We have composed a list underscoring 5 qualities a good teacher should manifest.

Excellent communication skills

A good teacher must exhibit exemplary communication skills. Expressing thoughts and ideas, and sharing and disseminating knowledge and information are indispensable. There are a few points to bear in mind to enable efficient communication:

Robust education and proficient knowledge

Another important quality of a teacher is their educational background and expertise in their field of knowledge. Whether they are teaching history or science, a certain level of education is essential for teaching. Moreover, possessing a deep understanding of the discipline is also vital.

A teacher should always be ready to answer any questions being asked. In addition, a teacher should be able to instill passion in their students for the subject. It will inspire students to do their study and research and turn their learning experience into a truly rewarding one.

Friendly and cordial nature

Bossy, rude and authoritarian teachers are always undesired by students, as their behavior can hamper the smooth learning process and adversely impact the educational development of students. If teachers are approachable, open, and congenial – these qualities will usher in seamless communication. And it is much more likely that students will feel motivated, enjoy and actively engage in the learning process.

Patience

The great political thinker Edmund Burke said, ‘Our patience will achieve more than our force.’ This saying aptly highlights the importance of patience when it comes to teaching. A teacher should display patience and empathy at all times. A teacher should be able to perceive the differences and potential of their students and accordingly plan to accommodate them.

Students should feel relaxed and talk to their teachers openly about any issue they face, and teachers should listen to them calmly. In addition, some students can test their teacher’s patience, knowingly or unknowingly. Even under such a scenario, teachers should display patience and empathy.

Strong work ethic

A strong work ethic is another quality that is crucial for a teacher to embody. Teaching can be a tough job and can drain a teacher’s energy. As such, a strong work ethic ensures that the teacher is capable of taking responsibility and countering obstacles and succeeds against all odds.

As such they should avoid several activities that can distract them or their students, such as constantly checking the phone, moving far away from the webcam, drinking or eating during the class timings, and similar distracting habits. Additionally, teachers should be punctual about timings and avoid absences. If teachers strongly follow the work ethic, they can make the learning experience pretty dynamic and motivating.
